Kashiwaya Honten

Kashiwaya Honten has stood beside Kitamuki Kannon, the northward-facing Kannon that pairs with Zenkoji as the complementary axis of Shinshu Buddhist geography, for over 130 years, and the inn's identity cannot be extracted from that adjacency: meals are served in private dining rooms where the temple grounds are visible through the shoji, and the two-minute walk to the Kannon is not a suggested activity but an extension of the stay.

The shoin-zukuri structure, all-tatami throughout, reads as genuine age rather than curated heritage, worn correctly.

The onsen draws from Bessho's alkaline spring with full kakenagashi flow through hinoki, rock, and rotenburo configurations, yielding water that is gentle rather than mineralogically arresting, the so-called Bijin no Yu asks nothing of the bather except time.
