Takumi no Yado Yoshimatsu

Perched on the highlands above Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji visible on clear mornings, Yoshimatsu is an 18-room sukiya-style inn where the omotenashi consistently outperforms the architecture. The Kyoto-style kaiseki (eleven in-room courses drawing from coastal catches at nearby fishing ports and mountain produce from the Hakone interior) is honest, seasonal, and locally grounded without being philosophically daring.

Simple sulfur water from the Ashinoyu source feeds both communal baths and private rotenburo; the mineral character is mild but unmistakably present, the slight sulfur note confirming what the water certificates declare. What most distinguishes this inn is the loyalty it generates: guests return across gaps of nearly a decade finding the quality of attention largely intact, and a hospitality score of 4.86 on Ikyu is not achieved by formula.

The notable distance between that score and the facility rating (the lowest Ikyu criterion by some margin) signals dated physical elements, particularly reported fluorescent lighting in the bathing spaces, that the warmth of the nakai alone cannot resolve.
