Yugawara Seikouen

A former Meiji statesman's private retreat — now a two-room inn registered as a national tangible cultural property — Seikouen occupies a category the guide rarely encounters: a building with accumulated memory, where guests sleep beneath the calligraphy of Ito Hirobumi and wake to the low, continuous sound of the Chitose River. The host's personal guidance through the fusuma paintings and architectural details achieves a quality of attention that two-room scale alone cannot guarantee; here it is earned through evident historical scholarship and care.

Seikouen's bathing provision is modest: a private bath accompanies the two-room stay, while the building, riverside atmosphere, and host-led interpretation remain the reasons to choose it. The cuisine earns consistent praise — the sashimi at dinner is of genuine quality and the chef's touch is described as singular among onsen ryokan — but the Western breakfast, however faithful to the building's Meiji biography, cannot complete the ritual arc that kaiseki mornings provide in the guide's higher-scoring establishments.
