Itoya occupies a position in Yugawara's cultural memory that few inns anywhere can claim: two of its three Taisho-era main buildings carry National Registered Tangible Cultural Property designation, Shimazaki Toson conceived 夜明け前 within these walls and his manuscripts remain, and Room 十九番, the sole incident site outside Tokyo during the 2・26 revolt, is still bookable, still furnished as it stood in February 1936.

The onsen is served kakenagashi from a 65.

5°C source with two private baths available without surcharge whenever unoccupied, and nakai attend both meals in the room, the structural bones of genuine ryokan hospitality intact at a price that does not demand tribute for the history. The principal restraint is the table: the 半会席 format, some ten courses centred on Sagami seafood, is seasonal, monthly-changing, and prepared with evident care, yet it falls short of the philosophical ambition and vessel-consciousness that kaiseki at its highest demands.

The official spelling is Itouya, and the inn dates its founding to 1888. Thirteen rooms occupy a complex whose gate, stone walls and two main buildings are nationally registered cultural properties. Two private baths can be used without extra charge when vacant. The station bus takes about thirteen minutes, keeping this unusually dense literary history within easy reach of Tokyo.

For planning purposes, the inn has 13 rooms, check-in begins at 15:00, and the clearest public-transport approach is 13 min by bus from yugawara station. Those practical details reinforce the character already visible in the stay: heritage ryokan hospitality grounded in a specific landscape rather than a generic resort programme.

For an inn carrying this weight of cultural inheritance, the cuisine is the one dimension where the experience does not yet meet its own legend.
