Motoyu Kansuiro

Founded in 1614 and counted among the Hakone Seven Springs, Kansuiro carries the kind of history that cannot be purchased or constructed, only inherited. The four-storey cedar building erected between 1919 and 1924, raised without central pillars using rare timber gathered from across Japan, is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and the inn's defining argument: this is a place where architecture has aged into something closer to landscape than building.

Three alkaline springs at pH 8. 9 feed the baths in pure kakenagashi style, the water silken on the skin and consistently the inn's highest-rated element.

The monthly changing kaiseki draws on Hakone's mountain produce and the seafood of Sagami Bay, and a kitchen flexible enough to accommodate full vegan menus suggests genuine culinary confidence rather than rote execution. The one note of restraint: Ikyu's hospitality scores (4. 35) run measurably behind the facility and onsen marks, the inn's deepest qualities live in its cedar and its water more than in the hands of its nakai, Service appears sound, although public ratings place it behind the architecture and bathing.

The official history dates Kansuiro to 1614 and the present multi-storey timber building to 1919. Tonosawa Station is only five minutes away on foot, a rare convenience for a property with this degree of seclusion. Guests should accept the quirks of protected old architecture in exchange for rare woods, gorge air and spring water adjusted daily by the inn’s dedicated bath attendant.

What a guest will remember: the private outdoor bath after 10pm in the Tonosawa gorge, when the cedars go dark and four centuries of alkaline water continue to flow.
