Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya

Founded in 1551, Daikokuya has been tended by sixteen generations of the Muroi family beside the Itamuro river in the Nasu Highlands, an unbroken lineage that constitutes, by itself, a form of cultural argument.

The kakenagashi spring runs at pH 9. 7, among the most alkaline in Tochigi, and the comprehensive bathing suite, rotenburo with river views, private kashikiri buro, large communal bath, delivers what guests across a century of visits have consistently identified as the stay's defining physical transformation.

What lifts this inn decisively above its tier is a cultural programme of genuine international weight: since 1990, Mono-ha sculptor Kishio Suga has installed five gardens on the property, and the Souko Museum, built in 2008, holds the most significant permanent collection of his work in existence; the 16th-generation director, Shunji Muroi, leads personal tours of the collection, an ichigo ichie moment of the kind that cannot be manufactured at scale. The inn's relative weakness is shitsurai: the material culture of the rooms, futon grade, tokonoma curation, in-room amenity depth, has not fully kept pace with the philosophical ambition the art programme demands of it.

Daikokuya’s official record confirms its 1551 founding and current stewardship by the sixteenth generation. A reserved transfer connects the thirty-one-room property with Nasushiobara Station. The art is not decorative filler: exhibitions, garden installations and the Kishio Suga museum form part of the daily rhythm, balanced by naturally flowing water and restrained food rather than resort entertainment.

A guest will carry home the sensation of standing among Suga's stone and rope installations as autumn light shifts through the cedars, then walking barefoot back to bathe in water that has been flowing since the Sengoku period.
