Sanraku's case rests on its water. Eight hundred litres per minute of unfiltered, uncirculated spring — drawn from the same source that persuaded Emperor Showa to site the Imperial Villa on the adjacent ridge — gives this century-old inn a natural distinction within the Nasu district.

The kaiseki kitchen rotates across eighteen seasonal cycles and draws on the Highlands' dairy and vegetable terroir with genuine regional commitment, though the cooking lacks the last degree of artisanal ambition that would elevate it to the highest tier. Nakai service is warm and reliably praised across hundreds of reviews, and the sukiya framework of the building retains its architectural dignity; however, cracked basin fittings and tatami in need of replacement are noted by multiple independent guests and suggest a maintenance deficit the inn's historical standing does not excuse.

The imperial water is worth the journey — the building requires attention.
