Tabist Shiobara Onsen Kashiwaya Ryokan

Kashiwaya Ryokan is arranged along the Kanomata River, where six private open-air baths step down the wooded slope. Each has a different position and tub, allowing couples and families to find privacy while listening to the river below. The sodium chloride and sulfate spring is used free-flowing.

Tatami rooms and Japanese-Western twins keep the accommodation simple. The building shows its age, but the bath circuit gives guests far more variety than the modest scale suggests.

Meals are served in a communal dining room and follow a mountain-country style, using Tochigi beef, yuba, strawberries and other local ingredients in season. Kashiwaya suits bath enthusiasts who will trade polished corridors for repeated private soaks and the sound of the valley, with straightforward regional cooking completing the stay.
