Chikuma no Yu Shigenoya

The name is the declaration of purpose: 千曲乃湯, the hot spring of the Chikuma River. Shigenoya has spent sixty years at Togura Kamiyamada, one of Shinshu's oldest onsen districts, and its simple alkaline sulfur water arrives kakenagashi — drawn direct from a source 500 metres distant — with the quiet authority of something the earth has been doing long before the inn was built.

At eight rooms, the scale permits the hospitality the numbers reflect: a 4.91 Ikyu hospitality score is not arithmetic, it is the accumulated result of arrivals where the matcha lands at the right moment and the meal that follows delivers Shinshu mushrooms and salmon at their season, reduced in salt, deepened with dashi. The facility scores — 4.47 on rooms, 4.51 on amenities — are honest about the inn's limitations: Shigenoya wears sixty years of age without the architectural curation that transforms patina into wabi-sabi.
