Auberge Yusura
Mie Prefecture, 1347-2 Matsushita, Futami-cho, Ise City
¥¥¥¥ · Traditional Ryokan
AUBERGE YUSURA is named in the French tradition but serves kaiseki prepared by a chef schooled in Kyoto — a deliberate tension the inn resolves, most evenings, in favour of its Japanese soul. The culinary table is its most compelling credential: ama-caught abalone finished in its own liver soy sauce, Ise Bay lobster, Matsusaka beef in season, and vegetables drawn from Mie's interior are handled with the seriousness and technique that justify the 料亭宿 designation in the name.
Sakakibara Onsen water — cited in Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book over a thousand years ago, alkaline, antioxidant, deeply skin-softening — fills the villa baths by transport rather than natural flow, a limitation the discerning guest will register and that honest review already documents. The proprietress leads with a warmth that only a five-group operation can reliably produce; service is private, unhurried, and personal without becoming theatre.
A guest will remember stepping from the tatami room into the rotenburo as Sakakibara's silky water covers the shoulders, the sound of the Futami river below, crabs threading the stones in the lantern-light.
