Yachi Onsen

Yachi Onsen is an old wooden inn standing alone beside the Yachi wetlands at the foot of Mount Hakkoda. Its 38 rooms range from retro rooms in the main building to a west wing with beds. The surrounding alpine landscape and weather are inseparable from the stay, and the long approach from Aomori reinforces the sense of retreat.

The baths are the reason to come. Two springs emerge naturally from beneath the bath floors and are used free-flowing, creating different temperatures and water characters. One bath retains its historic atmosphere; another has been renewed in fragrant Aomori hiba. There is no open-air bath or sauna, but the direct relationship between source and tub is more compelling than a long facility list.

Meals include regional ingredients and mountain fare, served in a setting that remains rustic rather than luxurious. Yachi rewards travellers willing to plan around the mountain, slow down to its weather and accept rustic comforts in exchange for an exceptional relationship with the spring.
