Tsutaya Tokinoyado Kazari

A mountain ryokan at 1,200 metres in the Kaida Highlands, founded in 1688 in one of Japan's historically resonant corridors — the Kiso Valley that Matsuo Basho walked and that the Nakasendo highway traced for centuries. The inn's clearest contemporary strength is its kitchen: a regionally anchored kaiseki drawing on highland vegetables, Shinshu beef, and seasonal river fish, finished tableside by craftsmen in a manner that earns Ikyu's highest category score among all evaluated criteria and consistent, unambiguous guest enthusiasm.

The hinoki cypress baths draw from the inn's own metasilicic acid spring — colourless, smooth, and minerally distinct — with a rotenburo that frames the volcanic silhouette of Ontake and private baths accessible through the night. Omotenashi is warm and reliably executed; the tent-sauna suites and Western-bed options introduce a contemporary confidence that, while not displacing the traditional wing, keeps the wabi-sabi of the inn aspirational rather than fully achieved.

What a guest carries home: the outdoor bath in deep winter snowfall, Mt. Ontake white and still above a Kaida sky that has no rival for stars in central Honshu.
