Tsukubasan Edoya

Tsukubasan Edoya stands close to Mount Tsukuba Shrine, continuing an innkeeping tradition of more than 390 years. Large windows, filtered woodland light and Japanese rooms make the mountain feel present before guests set out for the shrine or cableway.

The bathhouse uses Tsukuba hot-spring water in a large indoor bath and an open-air bath surrounded by greenery. The experience is calm and conventional, giving walkers a restorative close to the day without turning the inn into a bath theme park.

Dinner draws broadly from Ibaraki’s farms and coast. Rose pork, Hitachi beef and Yago chicken may be paired with fresh vegetables in original Japanese courses. Edoya is most compelling when treated as part of Mount Tsukuba itself: an old lodging house, local dinner and woodland bath gathered beside the historic approach.
