Takenoya Ryokan

Takenoya has stood on Shinmon-dori for about 140 years, immediately before the main approach to Izumo Taisha. A 2017 reopening renewed the 21 rooms while preserving the identity of a pilgrimage-town inn.

Seasonal Japanese cooking gives the evening a regional frame, with Izumo’s cultural setting carrying more significance than elaborate resort facilities. The experience is calmest after day visitors have left the shrine district.

A large communal bath uses ordinary heated water; there is no natural hot spring, outdoor bath, or private bath. Takenoya should be chosen for history, location, and a traditional room. It is particularly suited to travelers who want the atmosphere of Izumo Taisha before and after the busiest visiting hours.
