Matsuen: The Ancient Romance Inn of Izumo, Where Myths Come Alive

Matsuen is a ten-room inn that turns Izumo’s ancient culture into a complete design idea. The raised-floor detached suite Uyato Ben, designed by Atelier Egumi, combines contemporary Japanese architecture with references to archaeological forms and won a JIA award.

Dinner explores “ancient food” alongside seasonal regional cuisine, giving the stay a rare conceptual coherence. The approach is experiential rather than strictly orthodox, and it offers a memorable alternative to standard kaiseki.

Free-flowing spring water supplies the communal and private baths. There is no outdoor public bath, but the direct water use and architectural setting compensate for a smaller circuit. Matsuen suits curious travelers drawn to design, mythology, and a meal that interprets place rather than merely sourcing from it.
