Taishoya

Taishoya is Ureshino Onsen's most architecturally distinguished inn, its interiors conceived by Junzo Yoshimura (the same hand responsible for Tawaraya's annex and the modern Imperial Palace) in a series of commissions spanning 1974 to 1990 that pursued what Yoshimura called architecture attuned to the human senses. The waters justify the visit on their own terms: a sodium bicarbonate-chloride spring flowing kakenagashi at source temperatures of 85–95°C, placing Ureshino among Japan's three great beauty-enhancing hot springs, the mineral silkiness immediately perceptible on the skin.

The kitchen works a monthly rotating kaiseki programme anchored to Ariake Sea seafood, Saga beef, and the house yu-dofu (hot spring tofu produced at the inn's own atelier), all presented in Arita ware, the ceramic tradition of this prefecture. Against these strengths, scale is the honest liability: 73 rooms is a large count, and the Ikyu facility rating of 4.27 (the property's lowest criterion) reflects a building that shows its decades with incomplete dignity in some areas.

What is admirable is the service culture that persists at this scale: an allergy note placed beside the room's tea confection without being asked is a small thing that reveals a systemic intention.
