Shikishima Jozankei Bettei earns its keep on the strength of its kitchen and the clarity of its ambition: an adult-only bettei of ten rooms on the Toyohira riverbank, built around the seasonal abundance of Hokkaido's larder. The kaiseki score on Ikyu is a rare 5.00 — a figure that demands respect — and the sōsaku kaiseki format, tuned to Hokkaido terroir from crab to mountain vegetable, justifies the property's self-identification as a gourmet inn above all else.
The onsen is genuine kakenagashi sodium-chloride water with outdoor bathing, though the water is pleasant rather than extraordinary. Where the establishment falls short of deeper ryokan traditions is in its physical register: a 2019 building with low beds on tatami carries none of the wabi-sabi weight that aged cypress and worn lacquer produce, and the contemporary design, while tasteful, does not achieve stillness so much as comfort.
The guest will leave remembering a particular evening of seasonal Hokkaido seafood served at its peak — not the room.
