Sanyo-so

Sanyo-so occupies a position without parallel in the Izu peninsula: a villa conceived for one of Meiji Japan's great industrialist families, set within a nine-thousand-square-metre garden that Ogawa Jihei — the same hand that shaped the grounds of Heian Shrine and Nanzenji's Murin-an — brought into being at the turn of the twentieth century. The sukiya-style main building, a nationally designated tangible cultural property, delivers architectural gravitas that no amount of corporate management can fully extinguish, and the kakenagashi onsen fed by the mild alkaline waters of Izu Nagaoka runs into every room.

Where the Prince Hotels parentage shows most plainly is in the kitchen: the kaiseki is competent and seasonal, local in ingredient, but reviewers reach for 'properly delicious' rather than exceptional, and the dining room rather than the nakai's hands is sometimes the frame for the evening meal. Physical maintenance — stained surfaces, ageing humidity damage in attached baths, and dust on fixtures — remains an unresolved tension with the property's luxury positioning.
