Ryokan Ichinomatsu keeps a recognisably traditional rhythm despite being within easy reach of Hakodate Airport and the city centre. Shoes give way to tatami throughout the building, and the 29 predominantly Japanese-style rooms look onto a Kyoto-style garden. Seasonal flower arrangements prepared by the proprietress bring a personal note to the otherwise restrained interiors.
Both dinner and breakfast are brought to the guest room. The menu changes with the seasons and draws on seafood from the nearby coast as well as mountain produce, letting travellers experience Hakodate ingredients without moving into a restaurant dining room.
Yunokawa hot-spring water is available in the large indoor bath and open-air bath. The bath circuit is compact and complements the inn’s quiet, floor-seated atmosphere. Ichinomatsu is best for travellers who prefer tatami, in-room meals and a small garden over the bustle and facilities of a larger onsen hotel.
