Menmentei Wataya

Menmentei Wataya draws from two sources, blending Iwamuro water with the Dairo no Yu source for a sulfur-tinged sodium-calcium chloride bath. The water flows freely through the communal indoor and open-air baths, with the women’s outdoor pool looking toward Mount Matsutake and Mount Taho.

The owner grows much of the Koshihikari rice and vegetables used in the kitchen. Combined with seasonal Echigo seafood, that direct agricultural connection gives dinner and breakfast unusual clarity about where the ingredients come from.

Wataya suits travellers who want Iwamuro’s water and Niigata’s food culture in equal measure. Mountain views, two-source bathing and rice grown by the inn make the stay feel rooted in the surrounding landscape rather than assembled from generic ryokan elements.
