Kappo Ryokan Shimizu is a ten-room inn on Ieshima, reached by boat from Himeji and equipped with its own pier. Every room faces the Seto Inland Sea, but the island’s working fishing culture matters more than a generic ocean view.
The owner-chef, born on Ieshima into a third-generation culinary family, builds an eight-course dinner around what boats land that day. The menu changes with both season and weather, turning local fish into a genuinely unrepeatable meal rather than a fixed showcase.
Communal and private baths provide a simple close to the evening, but there is no natural hot spring. Shimizu is an island fish auberge first: ideal for travelers prepared to make the crossing for a chef-led dinner, intimate scale, and a direct connection to the harbor.
