Tatami SuiteDetached Villa

For 380 years the Tokiwaya has occupied its address on Oyudori, close enough to the Oyu bathhouse that steam from the village's own source drifts past its windows on cold mornings. The Sennin Buro — three hot spring streams converging in a single great bath, selected among Japan's finest hundred — is the inn's central argument and its most honest expression.

Three sulfurous sources of different mineral composition, all flowing unfiltered around the clock, offer a bathing experience that cannot be replicated at altitude or price. The rooms are tatami throughout, the lobby carries the Sagarifuji family crest and the Senshin-an tea room, and breakfast arrives with pickled Nozawana — a green closely associated with this mountain village — alongside onsen tamago and Shinshu miso that place the guest firmly in the mountains of Nagano.

The dinner menu, a Japanese-French creative cuisine served in private dining rooms, shows a kitchen with genuine ambition and seasonal awareness, though guests seeking strict kaiseki tradition will find something more personal and idiosyncratic here. The owner's direct engagement with guests adds a human quality that larger inns cannot manufacture.
