Tokiwa Ryokan

Tokiwa Ryokan is a nine-room family-run inn at the foot of Irohazaka, small enough for the owners’ presence to shape the stay. Renovated Japanese rooms and Japanese-Western rooms with beds provide a simple, comfortable base between central Nikko and the road toward Lake Chuzenji.

Dinner is the standout. A twelve-course creative Japanese meal incorporates Nikko yuba in several forms, treating the local tofu-skin tradition as a recurring ingredient rather than a single side dish. Breakfast returns to basics with Tochigi rice and grilled fish.

The large communal bath uses hot-spring water but remains compact, with no elaborate open-air circuit. Tokiwa is a good fit for food-focused travellers who value a small inn, direct family hospitality and a calm evening meal more than extensive bathing or grand public rooms.
