Takahashiya Kanzanso

Takahashiya Kanzansou occupies a wooden building of age and quiet dignity on the bank of the Echigo Arakawa (designated by the Ministry of the Environment as one of Japan's hundred finest waters) with the Iide mountain range holding the horizon beyond. The onsen is the inn's primary argument: a sodium chloride-sulfate spring of genuine mineral character, source temperature near 70°C, expressed most memorably in a rooftop private rotenburo where the river runs below and the mountains stand at distance, a space that earns the Ikyu onsen score of 4.91 without assistance.

The kitchen carries the identity of its region honestly (Iwafune Koshihikari rice cooked in local water, hearth-side seasonal cooking from mountain and sea rather than classical kaiseki formality, a table that reveals Niigata rather than a syllabus), and the hostess couple's sustained personal presence, evident in the coffee offered at departure and in the repeat guests who return year after year, gives the inn a human warmth that numbers alone do not capture. Where this establishment does not reach is in the material refinement of its shitsurai: the amenities are correct but unexceptional, the aesthetic curation of the rooms does not approach the depth of an inn aspiring to wabi-sabi in its fullest expression.

A guest will remember the private bath at the top of the building, the Arakawa below catching the last light, and the small cup of coffee that ended the stay.
