Sawaoto Onsen Uchimi Ryokan

The fire of 1982 that consumed the original building was, in retrospect, a test of inheritance.

The current structure, wood and lime plaster, forty years old and acquiring its own patina, was rebuilt by the eighth generation and is now administered by the ninth, who cooks Kyoto-style kaiseki from Miyagi sea and satoyama at a table that holds no more than three parties per evening. The meal is the event: seasonal, regional, personally explained by the 館主 and his 若女将, with vessels selected with the attentiveness of a collector, reviews cite the tableware with the same fervour as the food.

The alkaline spring at pH 9. 0, cold at source and heated for the bath, is mineralogically genuine, ozone-sterilised, undiluted, exchanged in full each day, but it cannot achieve the primal authority of a naturally flowing onsen, and this inn does not pretend otherwise.

With five rooms and no more than three dinner parties on a typical evening, Uchimi is structured around the owner-chef’s table rather than facilities. Rifu Station is about ten minutes away by car. The mineral spring is genuine but cold at source and heated, so travellers should choose this inn for its personal explanations, collected tableware and measured Kyoto-style cooking.

For planning purposes, the inn has 5 rooms, check-in begins at 15:00, and the clearest public-transport approach is 10 min by car from rifu station. Those practical details reinforce the character already visible in the stay: rural ryokan hospitality grounded in a specific landscape rather than a generic resort programme.

What a guest carries home is not the bath but the unhurried moment when the 館主 set down a lacquered tray and began to explain the origin of everything on it.
