Nakoikan

Established in 1868 at Oama Onsen in Tamana, Nakoikan holds a position in Japanese inn culture that cannot be manufactured: in the winter of 1897, Natsume Soseki spent a week here and conceived Kusamakura, the novel he called his attempt to write haiku in prose form. The spring beneath the inn — a simple alkaline source flowing at 300 litres per minute without dilution or recirculation, silky on the skin at 38.5°C — is the physical argument for the stay; the dining room named 旬美庭 (Garden of Seasonal Beauty) is the culinary one, with monthly-rotating kaiseki menus and a breakfast of nine seasonal side dishes served alongside clay-pot rice. The 2018 renovation preserved late Edo-period wooden beams within the structure — a restraint that honours the fabric of the building rather than erasing it — and ten rooms of appropriate intimacy ensure that service remains human in scale.
