Keiryuso Shiorie

Keiryuso Shiorie holds one of the most naturally advantaged positions in Nagano Prefecture: inside Chubu Sangaku National Park, the Azusa River visible from tatami rooms that each give onto a private courtyard garden, with the Kamikochi bus terminal five minutes on foot. The cave bath (kakenagashi, water rising from beneath the inn itself) is the establishment's most singular offering, a darkness and mineral quiet that the more conventional rotenburo cannot replicate.

The kaiseki, awarded by Jalan in 2024 for dining quality, draws on Shinshu's mountain larder with evident seriousness; private dining rooms per guest ensure that no meal bleeds into anyone else's evening. Four Rakuten Travel Awards across the inn's 21-year history signal that this quality is systemic rather than intermittent.

The water is gentle rather than characterful (Sawando Onsen's mildness is its accessibility, not its distinction), and the inn's 2003 founding and 2024 renovation mean that the wabi-sabi of accumulated time is still being earned. What a guest will carry home is the cave bath at night, the river audible through the shoji, the stone walls close, the mountain water rising around them.
