Ichinoyu Katei

Ichinoyu Katei takes its name from Kodama Katei, a Meiji-era Nanga painter whose remaining works — some bearing the endorsement of the Imperial Household Agency — are displayed throughout the inn, lending the building a cultural register that its eleven rooms and moderate price point do not immediately suggest. The tatami extends everywhere, including the elevator, and each room carries the name of an ancient Japanese color: the gesture is earnest rather than decorative, and the horikotatsu set into every floor confirms a commitment to the material vocabulary of traditional inn culture.

The three-source kakenagashi blend — sodium calcium sulphate chloride — produces water of genuine mineral softness; the proprietress, who earns 4.83 on Ikyu for hospitality, combines with the inn's central position in Shibu Onsen's nine-bath sotoyu circuit to make bathing here a layered rather than merely adequate experience. The 果亭風懐石 is seasonal and local — Shinshu beef, mountain vegetables delivered at the correct temperature — without claiming the philosophical register of the great kaiseki houses.

The thing a guest carries home: emerging from the ninth sotoyu bath at dusk to find Shibu Onsen's cobblestone streets quiet, the inn's noren visible in the evening light, and the proprietress already expecting them.
