Hana no Kumo

Hana no Kumo occupies 3,000 tsubo of Izu Kogen forest above Ito City, close enough to the Izu Kyuko line to reach easily but positioned and named to feel genuinely hidden. Seven rooms — five in the main building and two in 100-year-old farmhouses relocated from Nagano and Gunma — use calcium chloride-sulfate spring water, and every room opens onto a private rotenburo; bathing at dawn in one's own outdoor bath above a cedar forest is the experience the inn is built around.
Chef Ogawa Masaru brings creative modern kaiseki with evident care for plating and presentation, and Ikyu's meal score of 4.61 confirms that the cooking exceeds expectations for the price tier. The design is an eclectic personal vision — one room furnished with Ole Wanscher chairs and a Louis Poulsen pendant, another with Ming dynasty lacquerware — interesting and considered but not the austere coherence of wabi-sabi at its most disciplined.
The owner conducts arrivals personally, accommodates birthdays without being asked twice, and receives repeat guests across years; at seven rooms, the inn is structurally built for the kind of attention that larger properties must manufacture.
