Tatami SuiteRiver View

Set on the banks of the Tone River in snow-country Gunma, Joetsukan operates with the quiet conviction of an inn that has earned its five rooms rather than been given them. The staff-to-guest ratio enables omotenashi that is genuinely anticipatory — boots and a coat laid beside the rotenburo before the request has formed — and Ikyu's hospitality and onsen scores, both at 4.86, confirm a consistency that small numbers alone do not guarantee.

The kakenagashi water runs alkaline and high-temperature through an unexpectedly comprehensive suite of baths: rotenburo with Tone River views, communal, kashikiri, and in-room open-air options. The kaiseki kitchen draws credibly from Joshu beef and Iwana char with a sommelier's sake selection, though the wine-and-cheese programme introduces a Western register that broadens the table for some guests while softening its Japanese clarity for others.

The rooms keep a quieter register than the baths and service, so Joetsukan's strength is felt most clearly in the human attention and river-facing bathing rather than in highly articulated shitsurai.
