Yukemuri no Yado Hanayui sits in Oita Prefecture, home to Japan's most thermally active landscape, and wears that identity in its name. A ten-room establishment drawing on a genuine multi-mineral free-flowing spring — bicarbonate, chloride, and weak alkaline saline waters in combination — it offers the kind of complex mineral bath that registers on the skin long after the guest has dried off.

The kitchen is the property's surest voice: an Ikyu meal score of 4.91 places it among Oita's more accomplished ryokan tables, drawing on the prefecture's larder of Bungo beef, fresh Beppu Bay fish, and mountain vegetables; the dishes arrive with enough consistency that satisfaction rates match the food scores almost exactly. Ten rooms with private rotenburo and a committed shuttle service create the structural conditions for omotenashi that exceed the transactional — but what remains provisional is the depth of design intention, as without clearer evidence of wabi-sabi curation or the seasonal transformations of a genuinely shun-attuned inn, the full measure of this property's spirit cannot yet be taken.
