Ryokan Yamazaki sits in the green hills of Takao, removed from central Kyoto’s density. Its 23 rooms retain tatami and futon after a 2025 renewal, giving the house a cleaner finish while preserving the familiar proportions of a traditional Japanese inn.
Seasonal kaiseki is the most persuasive reason to stay, especially when the surrounding maples make the journey feel connected to the meal. The kitchen also opens for lunch, giving food a life beyond the overnight package. Service is warm but informal rather than elaborately choreographed.
Yamazaki is best chosen for a quieter edge-of-Kyoto base, a tatami room, and dinner after a day in the hills. The renewed building remains comfortable without losing its modest, family-run character, while the forested setting offers a marked change from central Kyoto.
