Jouseikan

Jouseikan began in 1874 and reopened after renovation in 2019, bringing a long Kochi hospitality tradition into a 61-room modern building. The rooftop outdoor bath looks across the city and surrounding hills.

Food is the clearest regional statement. Tosa sawachi platters sit beside kaiseki and Western courses, while a dedicated workshop sears bonito over straw flame. That visible technique and local fish give dinner energy and specificity.

The communal and open-air baths use ordinary heated water rather than a natural spring; a sauna adds variety. Jouseikan should be chosen for Tosa cuisine, history, and welcoming scale. It is a compelling Kochi ryokan experience even though it is not an onsen destination.
