Gyokuhokan sits in Kawazu's Minetaonsen, a spring whose recorded history extends 1,300 years, fed by three distinct sources that flow without interruption through Shigeru Uchida's austere black interiors. The water earns its authority: sodium-chloride kakenagashi in Uchida-designed communal baths, three private baths outside the rooms, and four terraced suites with dedicated rotenburo, an onsen programme of genuine mineral character that an Ikyu rating of 4.82 confirms rather than flatters.

At the table, a modern kaiseki drawing honestly from Izu's Pacific coast and interior mountain season matches those marks, earning equal respect from a Japanese audience not given to easy praise. The Uchida renovation is the inn's irreversible commitment: it asks guests to find stillness in disciplined darkness rather than in worn hinoki and aged tatami, and those who accept that contract are rewarded by staff of evident warmth; a young attendant who appeared unbidden with mosquito coils before a guest could think to ask is the kind of detail that defines an omotenashi culture, not merely an omotenashi policy.
