Gora Kadan occupies the terraced hillside of Hakone's Gora district on the grounds of a Kan'in-no-miya imperial villa, operating as a ryokan since 1948. The colonnaded gateway and 1930 Western-style main building, its windows set with decorative stained glass, retain the formal gravity of their original purpose: a summer retreat for members of the imperial family. The name kadan translates as "a place to welcome honored guests," and that ceremonial spirit remains the property's animating principle.

Cuisine is the clearest strength here. The kaiseki served in-room or in the original dining hall draws from the seasonal bounty of Suruga Bay and Sagami Bay, shifting with the calendar from spring firefly squid and mountain bamboo shoots through the fatty winter yellowtail that marks the cold months. Courses arrive on ceramics chosen to complement each ingredient, delivered with a formality and technical precision that places this among Hakone's most serious culinary experiences. Sushi Kadan, a small counter off the main dining area, offers a more intimate alternative with the same seasonal commitment.

The onsen draws from two private springs within the garden, supplying mildly alkaline water through an extensive bathing circuit: communal indoor baths, a broad rotenburo, ganbanyoku rock sauna, and a conventional sauna. Private family baths with kakenagashi flow can be reserved at no charge for 40-minute sessions. Select annex suites include personal outdoor soaking tubs fed directly from the source, requiring no reservation.

Forty-one rooms spread across the main building and several garden annexes, from tatami suites with views over the seasonal plantings to detached rooms such as Kakou and Zangetsu, which offer greater seclusion and oversized private outdoor baths. Main-building rooms reflect their years: recent guests have described worn lacquerwork, dated furnishings, and occasional mustiness in older wing accommodations. A renovation program completed through early 2026 addressed several areas, though room selection remains consequential; the gap between a well-maintained annex suite and a tired main-wing room is considerable.

Gora Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway is three minutes on foot, making Gora Kadan the most accessible of Hakone's formal ryokan for guests arriving by Romancecar from Shinjuku. The property holds Relais & Chateaux membership and has earned three consecutive Michelin Keys, recognition that reflects consistent excellence in service and kaiseki even as physical renovation continues.

The moment a guest carries home: the first course of kaiseki arriving under the light of the stained-glass windows in the 1930 dining hall, the deep amber of the lacquer soup bowl catching the evening glow, while steam from the garden rotenburo drifts faintly through the old timber frame.
