Tatami Suite

Funaya has occupied its corner of Matsuyama since the Kan'ei era, and its guest list — Masaoka Shiki, Natsume Soseki, Takahama Kyoshi — reflects a position long held at the centre of this region's cultural life. The 詠風庭, a 1,500-tsubo garden where a stream runs and fireflies appear each June, is among the finer inn gardens in Shikoku, and the kakenagashi waters of Dogo Onsen, historically cited in the Man'yōshū, retain a gentleness that lingers on the skin long after the bath.

The kaiseki draws credibly from the Seto Inland Sea and Ehime's agricultural calendar, though the availability of French cuisine alongside it dilutes what could otherwise be a more coherent culinary statement. At 58 rooms — including some Western options — the inn lacks the structural conditions for the unrepeatable intimacy that smaller establishments create instinctively; what it offers instead is the authority of four centuries and a garden that earns its name.
