Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan

Keiunkan stakes its claim not through design philosophy or culinary artifice but through the irreducible authority of water and time. The onsen here has been flowing since 705 AD — continuous kakenagashi at 1,630 litres per minute, untreated and undiluted, arriving at the temperature the earth intends.

This is not an amenity; it is a geological fact rendered habitable. The nakai service holds across a 27-room house, and the kaiseki table draws creditably on Yamanashi's mountain terroir, the meals earning the highest sub-score among all Ikyu categories.

What Keiunkan cannot yet claim is distinction in the spaces where water is not the protagonist: the wabi-sabi of the interiors reads as well-maintained rather than artistically curated, and the element of genuine, unrepeatable surprise — ichigo ichie in its fullest expression — remains modest, with at least one guest noting directly that there were few surprises. The inn that the Keiun era bequeathed is one of honest and considerable merit, and one irreplaceable bath.
