Ayameya sits at the quieter end of Shima Onsen's single valley road, a ten-room family inn where the okami, Eri, has constructed a reputation for omotenashi that is difficult to overstate: an Ikyu hospitality score of 4.

The kaiseki draws from the Shima River below and the mountains above across nine or ten handcrafted courses, with regional specificity, catfish from the clear Shima River, mountain vegetables at their seasonal peak, that reflects genuine rootedness in place.

The onsen water is authentic Shima alkaline spring, soft and restorative, though guest accounts suggest the baths operate on a circulation rather than kakenagashi system, and the physical bathing spaces, while well-tended, are modest in architectural ambition. The inn's ceiling is its infrastructure: the wabi-sabi and physical environments are pleasant without being extraordinary, and the bathing facilities, despite their variety (outdoor bath, private bath, ganbanyoku, sauna), do not match the singular quality of the human experience delivered within these walls.

Ayameya is a ten-room family inn, reached by bus from Nakanojo Station. Its official information confirms a communal bath, open-air bath and reservable family bath, as well as nine or ten handmade semi-kaiseki dishes. The practical comforts are modest, but the small scale and direct involvement of the household give the stay a personal clarity that larger Shima properties cannot easily reproduce.

What distinguishes Ayameya absolutely is Eri herself, guests report being driven through the mountain valley she knows intimately before departure, a gesture of care that belongs to no programme.
