About

The definitive authority on Japan's finest ryokans

Our Mission

The Ryokan Guide exists to preserve and promote the art of the traditional Japanese inn. In a landscape of generic travel reviews and algorithmic recommendations, we offer something different: independent, expert-led editorial coverage of the ryokans that define Japanese hospitality at its highest expression.

We believe the ryokan experience — the convergence of architecture, cuisine, bathing culture, and service refined over centuries — represents one of the world's great cultural traditions. Our goal is to make this tradition accessible to the discerning international traveler while honoring the standards that make it extraordinary.

Editorial Standards

Every ryokan in The Ryokan Guide is assessed through anonymous, independently funded visits. Our reviewers book and pay for their own stays. No property can purchase inclusion, a higher rating, or preferential placement. Advertising relationships, where they exist, never influence editorial evaluations.

Properties are evaluated across eight criteria developed specifically for the ryokan experience: Omotenashi (holistic service), Ryori (seasonal cuisine), Onsen (bathing quality), Wabi-Sabi (design and tranquility), Shun (sense of place and seasonality), Shitsurai (cultural amenities), Ichigo Ichie (memorable rituals), and Kodawari (devotion to perfection). These scores are aggregated into our TRG Star rating, an eight-level system that provides the granularity needed to distinguish between exceptional and transcendent.

The Team

The Ryokan Guide editorial team combines deep expertise in Japanese culture, hospitality, and travel writing. Our contributors have collectively visited hundreds of ryokans across all 47 prefectures, bringing first-hand experience to every review, article, and recommendation we publish.

Our reviewers are fluent in Japanese, experienced in traditional hospitality evaluation, and steeped in the cultural nuances that distinguish an excellent ryokan from an extraordinary one. Each reviewer undergoes training in kaiseki cuisine appreciation, onsen water quality assessment, and architectural heritage recognition before conducting independent evaluations.

Independence

The trust of our readers is the only currency that matters. The Ryokan Guide is editorially independent. We do not accept payment for reviews, we do not participate in sponsored content programs, and we do not allow commercial interests to influence our ratings or recommendations.
